St. Albert Engagement Photography

Did you know

all of my wedding packages as an Edmonton wedding photographer include a complimentary engagement session? This means you get a FREE engagement photography session with your lover before your wedding day! Why do I do this? I include this in all of my wedding day packages because not only is it a great time for you and your partner to celebrate such an exciting time in your life but it’s also a great time for us to get to know each other and get you two more comfortable in front of my camera before your wedding day because being thrown in front of a camera for the very first time on one of the biggest days of your life can be very intimidating.

When I know and understand my couples on a deeper level, I can create an engagement photography session that’s intentional and unique to only them, and bring those same vibes on your wedding day. No one else can be YOU so let’s capture that, as it is. The photos are just the cherry on top but getting to meet and connect with my couples BEFORE their wedding day will always be most important to me!

Let’s go over a couple tips and tricks for planning your own engagement session and take a deeper look into these winter engagement photos in downtown St. Albert!

location

When planning your engagement photography session, location is everything! The first thing I do is I ask my couples if there is a place that is special or unique to them or an activity they like to do together. You want your engagement photos to represent you two as a couple so this question really helps nail down what makes them THEM. For example, this couple created a home with their beautiful daughter here in St. Albert so St. Albert feels like home to them so it just felt right that we take their engagement photos downtown St. Albert and then into Lions Park.

If my couples don’t have anything specific in mind, I’m always there to bounce ideas off of as the professional wedding photographer in this scenario and I also send them my master list of all my favourite photography locations in the Parkland County / Edmonton (ish) area!

outfits

What you wear to your engagement photos plays a huge role in how your final images will look! I like to keep things nice a natural so neutral colours with not too many patterns are always my go too. This couple here absolutely nailed their engagement session outfits! Here are a couple of my biggest tips for what to wear to your engagement photos

  • Neutral colours are your friend (creams, grey, browns, sage green, emerald, burgundy, beige etc.)

  • Stay away from too much black or else the two of you will blend together. My rule is one piece of black clothing on one person is okay.

  • Patterns are okay on ONE person but not both, try to stay away from too bold of a pattern.

  • Pick a statement colour for one person and match other outfits around just like how this sweater has a pop of green but everything else is neutral and matches

  • Make sure you feel comfortable in whatever you choose to wear

lighting

Lighting is the key component to making or breaking any kind of photoshoot so choosing what time of day you have your engagement photos is SO important! My golden rule is if your engagement photos are going to be outside, plan your photoshoot for 1.5-2 hours before sunset OR right at sunrise. How do you figure out when exactly the sun will rise and set on that date? Google my friend! Simply google β€œwhat time will the sun set in *insert location here* on *insert date here*”? It’s that simple!

Having good lighting is absolutely crucial in creating amazing images. During this winter enagment session here in St. Albert it was just slightly gloomy out which made for the most glorious even lighting across all of my images we made this day!

when dreaming up

your engagement photos, ask yourself these two questions:

  • Is there any place / location that is unique and special to the two of you as a couple?

  • Is there any activity you two like to do together?

The answer to these questions will help create an engagement photography session that represents you two as a couple but if nothing comes to mind, I’ll always be there to help bounce ideas off of and give great location suggestions!
